Smoothie Season Starts NOW

By Carolyn Stine May 7, 2019

All of your favorite, iconic desserts… health-ified in your morning smoothie.

As major breakfast lovers, we’ve seen it all. From avocado toast to loaded smoothie bowls on the wellness side, to our fair share of sweet treats (hello, pancakes and donuts!) on the naughtier side. But these days, we’ve been trying to curb our sweet tooth and opt for a breakfast that is nutrient-rich, filling, and sets us up for success at the start of our often hectic days. While steaming eggs and bowls of oatmeal felt so right for the cold weather months, spring has officially sprung, and we’ve found ourselves wanting to recharge and revamp our breakfast routine so it feels just right for the warm weather. And that’s where the beauty of the breakfast smoothie comes in. Not only is it icy and refreshing on a sunny day, but it’s portable for you girls on the go, and could not be easier to make -  you literally throw the ingredients into the blender and bam, it’s done. However, in true Bashed fashion, we’re not out here blending up just any old, basic smoothies. We’re taking full inspiration from our favorite, decadent, nostalgic, and just plain crave-worthy desserts. This is dessert for breakfast 2.0 - the Bashed guide to whipping up a morning smoothie that satisfies your childhood sweet tooth while delivering on a healthy start to your morning.

Milk Bar

Birthday Cake Truffles from Milk Bar

These little balls of heavenly goodness burst onto the scene and took the dessert world by storm… as well as our hearts and stomachs. What we love about these birthday cake truffles from Milk Bar, above the rainbow sprinkle delight and the perfectly poppable size and shape, is the epic vanilla flavor. We often think of them as the vanilla-iest vanilla dessert option out there. And so naturally, we sought to recreate this flavor for our first meal of the day. This birthday cake smoothie does the trick, and the tiniest dash of almond extract is the secret ingredient that absolutely makes it.

The Salty Pimp from Big Gay Ice Cream

When Big Gay Ice Cream first became a fixture in our lives, we absolutely could not get enough of that salty caramel topping that covered the smooth vanilla soft serve. So much so that we ate it at all times of the year, because ice cream is a 365 day per year sport in our humble opinion. However, the quest to recreate that salted caramel flavor in a smoothie was not an easy one. We found our holy grail of salted caramel smoothie recipes here, and it features the unexpected addition of coconut cream and coconut water to give it all of that luscious flavor.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookie from Levain Bakery

Why have just any old cookie when you can have a cookie the size of your face with a molten, ooey-gooey center? When it comes to a cookie craving, Levain is the name of the game for us. Our flavor of choice is the dense, chocolate cookie studded with melty peanut butter chips. Literally just got the chills thinking about it. The good news is, this is one the easiest and most delicious desserts to recreate for your breakfast smoothie. The sneaky addition of banana and a touch of maple syrup for sweetness make it a good-for-you option that still feels like a treat.

Banana Pudding from Magnolia Bakery

Let’s face it: while Magnolia’s cupcakes were hot for a while, we were always in the game for their banana pudding. It is far and away the best item at this bakery, and makes us think of the banana pudding we grew up eating at sleepaway camp. The layers of vanilla wafers, silky vanilla pudding, and sliced banana are positively epic when combined in one bite. And that epic bite has been recreated sensationally in this banana pudding smoothie recipe. Trust us: that dash of cinnamon at the end is everything.

Frozen Hot Chocolate
Running With Spoons

Frozen Hot Chocolate from Serendipity

To this day, we have a memory frozen in time of coming into New York City as young girls and sharing a frozen hot chocolate from Serendipity with our mother (two straws, please). It felt like the most exciting, big-girl treat that one could have - icy, smooth hot chocolate with a huge dollop of whipped cream in a bowl made big enough for a small family. Welp, while whipped cream may not be on the breakfast menu at our household, this smoothie certainly is. Chia seeds and rolled oats add a boost of fiber while filling you up, and the rich cocoa powder makes this a chocolate lover’s paradise in a glass.

Strawberry Shortcake from Jars by Dani

When Jars by Dani turned our favorite height-of-summer dessert into a delightful layered trifle in the cutest mason jar, we swooned. Hard. It was sweet, brightly colored, portable, and giftable - what more can a gal ask from her dessert? This strawberry shortcake smoothie fits all of those descriptors too (minus the giftable, but hey, why not try it?), but it also is healthy and nourishing. The addition of raw cashews add incredible texture and richness, and we love the bright, clean lemon zest finish.

Bday Cake Smoothie

Cookie Dough Ice Cream from Van Leeuwen

As if there was ever a more classic ice cream flavor than chocolate chip cookie dough. We love that combo of vanilla ice cream chocolate-y chips, and cookie dough nuggets and can’t imagine ever tiring of it (seriously… it’s been three decades and counting). Getting that thick and creamy consistency is always key, and this incredible cookie dough smoothie recipe uses frozen cauliflower to give it out of this world creaminess (don’t worry, you don’t taste it at all).

Red Velvet Cupcake from Sprinkles

True confessions: red velvet cupcakes were just a vehicle for cream cheese frosting until we met the red velvet cupcake from Sprinkles Bakery. Not only does the color just make us happy, but the rich cocoa flavor is out of this world. What we love the most about the smoothie version of this delicious cupcake is that its ingredients pack a powerful antioxidant punch. The fresh beet adds both color and crazy health benefits, dates add natural sweetness, and there’s even a sneaky handful of spinach thrown in there to keep you powered up all day long.
