Meals to Bring to New Mamas

By Carolyn Stine January 24, 2019

The gifts have stopped flowing, and the flowers are wilting on the kitchen island. It’s just the new mama and the newest addition to her family, and both sleep and free time are looking like a rare luxury to her these days. Those premeditated, home cooked meals? Feeling like a thing of the past right about now. It’s at this time that sending along some love in the form of a prepped and ready meal can be the kindest and most thoughtful thing you can treat your new mama friends to. We pulled together our favorite meals for new mamas that are not fussy to eat, travel well, and can be easily frozen and defrosted for enjoyment at a later date. Bonus points given for those that can be eaten for one hand while multitasking with a newborn.

Tuscan Bean Soup

Easy, hearty, and healthy, this nourishing soup will be incredibly comforting for a new mama. We love that the recipe can be made vegetarian if necessary (just skip the ham), and can be doubled and sent over with one batch to eat now, and one batch to freeze. Prep the garlic bread and send it over unbaked, so they can throw it in the oven quickly whenever they’re ready to enjoy.

No-Bake Protein Energy Balls

We love a dish that can multitask for many meals, and these energy balls fit the bill. They’re perfect as breakfast or a quick snack on the go, and it doesn’t hurt that they are a cinch to eat while nursing. Also, any excuse to enjoy peanut butter in a healthy way makes these great in our book.

One Skillet Chicken with Buttery Orzo

We love a balanced dinner, but having to pack up separate tupperware containers of protein, veggies, and starch can be a bit much when trying to make your new mama friend’s life easier. That’s why we love this one skillet chicken dish - the lemon and white wine add the perfect pop of flavor to the chicken and orzo, which as accompanied by fennel and leeks for that daily dose of greens.

Baked Oatmeal with Blueberries and Banana

A steaming bowl of oatmeal is one of our favorite breakfast, but making it on the fly can be time-consuming for a new mama. We opted for this baked oatmeal recipe instead, which can be thrown in the fridge and reheated or eaten cold as the week goes on. Also, feel free to substitute other fruit and nut combos to suit the taste of your friend. Oh, and this recipe freezes well too!

One Pot Baked Pasta with Broccoli Rabe and Sausage

Hearty pasta dishes such as lasagna and baked ziti are always a crowd-pleaser, but if your new mama friend is looking for something on the lighter side, spring for this baked pasta with broccoli rabe and sausage instead. It could not be more simple to make, is hearty and filling, and it’s as much of a crowd-pleaser as those red sauce classics.

Mini Frittatas

The beauty of these mini frittatas? You can literally add in any ingredients that you have on hand, or that your new mama friend will enjoy. We love tomatoes, spinach, or even mushrooms in there as well. They freeze like a dream, and can be eaten for any meal of the day.

Chicken and Pea Traybake

The best part about this recipe? You don’t even need to use the stove. The chicken and peas make a hearty combo with tons of fresh dill, and you can throw a second sheet pan in the oven with baby potatoes to serve alongside. It’s perfection for lunch dinner, or even a midnight snack for the new mama.
