Amirah Kassem is a rainbow personified. It’s as if all the colors seeped into her body, mind, and spirit…and every chance they get, they’re finding ways out. From her wardrobe to her incredible wedding featured in Harpers Bazaar, and most notably, through her cakes and the Soho storefront that sells them. Amirah is the founder of Flour Shop, home of the rainbow explosion cake gone viral. She sat down with us to share her story and how to make your party feel unique.

Where are you from and what brought you to NYC? Mexico but the pizza brought me to NYC!

What was the inspiration behind Flour Shop? My childhood! Fun colors, playfulness of the aesthetic and of course the birthday lifestyle!

How was the Rainbow Explosion Cake born? It all started with the rainbow cake, but then I combined it with my birthday roots…piñatas!

Do you remember the first time you made a cake? Yes it was for my brother’s birthday!

If someone is looking for a cake for a special occasion like a wedding or anniversary, how do you help them decide what type of cake they should order? I love getting a list of things that they love: flamingos, glitter, unicorns, etc.

Whats your key to making an event feel unique and special? If the host is having fun, then so is everyone else!
